Underwear Factory opens as latest revitalized Poughkeepsie property

Around five years ago, the brick three-story building that housed the former Poughkeepsie Underwear Factory sat dilapidated and vacant.

The 143-year-old staple of Main Street — once a thriving and world-renowned hub of manufacturing — had boarded-up windows, crumbling infrastructure and a dank, dark basement. To the staff of Hudson River Housing, it seemed as if a forgotten relic of the past.

“It was just a vacant shell of a building,” said Christa Hines, the interim executive director of Hudson River Housing. “And our whole mission at Hudson River Housing is to improve lives and improve communities.”
